FRANCIS MAGALONA, CONFIRMED HIS ILLNESS LEUKEMIA
Francis Magalona’s deteriorating health was already evident during Eat Bulaga’s U.S. escapade last month. “Nilalagnat na tuwing hapon. Even before pa umalis for U.S., ganun na. Nung papuntang [Las] Vegas through bus, sobrang tamlay na,” said TAPE Inc. lady boss Malou Choa-Fagar.
Francis Magalona’s illness is “treatable” and he remains in good spirits
Friends and relatives of Francis Magalona are optimistic that the rapper-TV host will prevail against his battle with leukemia.
Two days after it was publicly revealed that the well-liked musician is in need of blood donors to replace the initial ones he already consumed in the hospital, PEP (Philippine Entertainment Portal) received a report that fans and friends started coming in droves to the Medical City in Ortigas, Pasig City to donate blood.
Other than the call for blood donors, Francis has made it clear that he doesn’t want his current fragile health to become a “media circus.”
He issued an official statement yesterday, August 14, which was read on air by Eat Bulaga! host Vic Sotto.
In the statement relayed via text message, Kiko (Francis’s nickname) confirmed: “Ngayon meron akong isang pagsubok na dapat daanan at ang hiling ko lang ang inyong pang-unawa at suporta. I have been diagnosed with leukemia and I am preparing for my treatment.”
He ended his message on a positive note: “Sa tulong ng Panginoon kakayanin ko po ito. Abangan ninyo ang aking pagbabalik. ‘Di ko lang kayo miss, love ko kayong lahat.”
GRADUAL SYMPTOMS. In an interview with music columnist Pocholo Concepcion, Francis’s wife Pia Arroyo confided that her husband started exhibiting symptoms of the disease around March of this year.
“It was very gradual, hindi siya biglang lumabas. We don’t want to use the word ‘curable,’ but the doctors say it’s treatable,” she told Pocholo.
Pia’s statement was acknowledged by TAPE Inc. executive Malou Choa-Fagar in a text message to YES! magazine’s Anna Pingol. Malou’s message was forwarded by Anna to PEP yesterday afternoon, August 14.
“Francis is in good spirits,” she said. “Palabiro pa rin.”
She revealed though that Francis’s health during Eat Bulaga‘s recent U.S. visit revealed a startling pattern.
“Nilalagnat na tuwing hapon. Even before pa umalis for U.S. ganun na. Nung papuntang [Las] Vegas through bus, sobrang tamlay na,” related Ms. Malou.
Francis’s condition was so evident that when Wally Bayola’s doctor dad saw Francis in Los Angeles, California, Dr. Romeo Bayola promptly remarked, “You’re sick.”
The iconic rapper immediately informed TAPE Inc. head honcho Tony Tuviera and the trio of Tito Sotto, Vic Sotto, and Joey de Leon of his condition the same day he learned of the diagnosis.
Kiko has been with Eat Bulaga! for 10 years and will turn 43 years old this coming October 4.

Can a meek editorial assistant (played by Sarah Geronimo) fall in love with an aggressive publisher (played by John Lloyd Cruz)? Will their office romance bloom or will it be nipped in the bud?
Anyone who has had to deal with a difficult boss will relate to the character of Laida (played by Sarah Geronimo), an editorial assistant who has to gratify all the demands of a magazine publisher named Miggy (played by John Lloyd Cruz). They initially have gaps between them but later on, they come to realize the good qualities of each other while working on the magazine called Bachelor.
This is the first time that John Lloyd and Sarah will be paired up on the big screen and both of them are excited to see the reactions of their fans.
“I am very proud of this movie, as usual, Direk Cathy is superb and si Sarah, ang galing galing niya. I never expected that A Very Special Love will be very special to us and hopefully, sa mga manonood din na sumusuporta sa akin, kay Direk [Cathy] at kay Sarah through the years, in our individual efforts,” says John Lloyd.
Sarah, on the other hand, cherishes the good memories that she had while making this. “Nag-iisa si John Lloyd Cruz, hindi mo matatawaran talaga ang galing niya at napaka-professional. It’s a dream come true sa akin na mabigyan ng pagkakataon na makatrabaho siya at sana, maulit pa.”
When asked whether her character will fulfill her own dreams in the movie, Sarah could only say, “Siyempre lahat naman tayo we root for Laida na matupad na ma-in love sa kanya ang kanyang Prince Charming na si Miggy ‘di ba? Pero ‘yan iiwan ko na para sa sagutin ng pelikula.”
Box-office director Cathy Garcia Molina and John Lloyd have collaborated on several movies already such as Close To You (2006) and last year’s box-office winner One More Chance. But this is the first time that Direk Cathy has worked with Sarah Geronimo.
With A Very Special Love being part of Star Cinema’s 15th anniversary, Direk Cathy can’t help but be proud of this film, especially since this is her fifth project with ABS-CBN’s film outfit. “Siyempre po natutuwa ako na makasama yung pelikulang ‘to, ang A Very Special Love sa 15th anniversary ng Star Cinema. It’s special in its own way, lahat ng nagshoot ng pelikulang ‘to with big hearts gave so much for the movie and I think mararamdaman n’yo yon. Thank you na na-recognize yung movie as worthy of being part of the 15th anniversary of Star Cinema.”
A co-production of Star Cinema and Viva Films, A Very Special Love opens in theaters nationwide starting Wednesday (July 30).

RICHARD GUTIERREZ AND KC CONCEPCION IN “FOR THE FIRT TIME”
After a ten-day trip in Greece, Star Cinema’s newest love team Richard Gutierrez and KC Concepcion share their experiences in Santorini island and the things they have discovered about each other.
Richard immediately dispelled notions that the daughter of Megastar Sharon Cuneta and heartthrob Gabby Concepcion is a princess who wants to be waited upon hand-and-foot. “After spending ten days with KC in Greece, talagang nakapag-bonding po kami dun at nakilala ko siya ng husto. Pero may mga ugali pa din si KC na dun ko lang din na-discover.
“Kung iisipin po natin, lahat tayo, ‘pag inisip natin si KC, meron agad tayong certain image na naiisip na parang prinsesa siya. Pero kung makikilala niyo po siya ng husto, try traveling with her. Napaka down-to-earth po ni KC,” he says about his leading lady.
For her part, KC reveals that Richard was also very nurturing but he spent every chance he could get to catch his much-needed sleep. “Sobrang takaw-tulog po si Chard! Apart from that, talagang mabait siya sa lahat,” she says. The GMA-7 star defends himself by saying that he has not been getting enough sleep for the past three years so he took this opportunity to get enough sleep and gather energy for the work ahead.
KC also observed that Richard was at first uneasy with the crew and staff since this is the first time that he is doing a movie under Star Cinema. “Nung una, nakita ko na ilang pa sa kanya yung mga kasama naming crew…I think partly because isa siyang Kapuso and alam naman natin kung paano siya tratuhin ng GMA, kaya siguro dahil doon, yung mga tao, naiilang sa kanya, iniisip kung ano ba ugali niya. Pero after a while, nakita ko na napakadali niyang pakisamahan.”
The movie’s title, For The First Time not only refers to their first tandem but also their first-time experiences in doing the film. This movie marks the first time that Richard is working with ABS-CBN’s film outfit, Star Cinema. This is also his first time to work with a female director, Ms. Joyce Bernal.
Greece is a seismically active island because of the presence of many volcanoes. Around 3,500 years ago, Santorini witnessed an awesome volcanic explosion that occurred in the Aegean Sea. This resulted in a huge caldera that is approximately four miles in diameter.
One experience that is very memorable for Richard and KC is the fact that an earthquake occurred in Santorini on their second day. Aside from that incident, the stars simply enjoyed the wonders of Greece. “Halos lahat po ng pagkain sa Greece, lahat ng salads natikman namin. Naglakad-lakad po kami dun, so nakapag-usap po kami ng maayos bilang magkaibigan,” reveals KC.
Richard adds: “Pati po yung sunset, yung hot spring…naging adventurous lang po kami dun sa Greece.”
For The First Time also stars Eddie Gutierrez, Phillip Salvador, and Pilar Pilapil. Also included are Geoff Eigenmann, Candy Pangilinan, Ana Roces, Bubbles Paraiso, Jake Cuenca, Beatriz Saw, Denise Laurel, and Carla Humphries.
This KC Concepcion-Richard Gutierrez starrer will open in cinemas nationwide starting August 27, 2008.
Mall shows of For The First Time are scheduled for August 17 (SM Bacoor), August 23 (Glorietta) and August 24 (SM North Edsa).
